Our Frederiksberg Workshop

TONI Copenhagen stems from a family's great love of traditional brass craftsmanship.

Brass working is an artisan craft that the Auchenberg family brought with them from Germany in the early 1800s, just over 100 years before the company was founded in 1918. Before creating the brand’s iconic kitchen and bathroom fittings in raw brass, the company was primarily focused on gas fittings and technical taps. These were formed using a metal lathe in their Copenhagen backyard. Later, TONI Copenhagen returned its production to the factory where all products are still, to this day, made by hand. With one foot in the past and one in the future, TONI Copenhagen sticks to the traditional craft roots we came from.

From raw brass to exclusive bathroom and kitchen fittings

Our journey starts in Italy, where the raw brass is poured into moulds. From there, we receive them here at the factory in Frederiksberg where we process them using traditional craft methods created in the past yet still practised today.

A hand-polished fitting has something special about it

All our bathroom and kitchen fittings are polished by hand by our expert grinders. They have been practising their craftsmanship for many years and this gives our products a true level of authenticity. Our products carry the fingerprints of the people who have held them in their hands, just as they will eventually carry the traces of those that use them.

When the expert craftman got tired of dripping fixtures

In 1935, Sparre-Petersen, an engineer and machine technician at Gentofte Hospital saw a need to develop a robust and maintenance-free fitting that could withstand heavy pressure. The final result was a series of high-arc taps built in traditional crafted style and intended for hospitals, institutions, industrial complexes and other places where taps must withstand very heavy loads. Since then, the SP has been called both the ‘industrial fitting’ and the ‘Rolls-Royce’ of taps with its classical design, elegant form and near-indestructible quality. It has been used worldwide for decades for everything from hospitals to embassies to private homes – becoming a much loved, classic addition to traditional Danish interiors.

45 treatments before the final result

After the first raw plastering, the units are passed to Tim who has been chief engineer at Toni Copenhagen for over 25 years. Tim knows all taps and fittings inside-out, allowing us to offer a series of specialised solutions to even the most meticulous customers.

Silver soldering

We solder all our taps and fittings by hand. Timing is crucial in this process as taps and solder silver cannot be allowed to overheat. Tim solders each tap with precise timing, before lowering the taps into hydrochloric acid, followed by clean water. This is done to remove all traces of soldering.

Quality control is a badge of honour

All taps and fittings are tested before leaving TONI. The test exposes the taps to a extremely high level of pressure, higher than what can be produced in a private home. If the tap can withstand the pressure, it is approved and can be delivered to the customer to be installed.
